Reclaiming Land and Reclaiming Tradition in Baltimore

Baltimore is home to a diverse community. One such community that may be overlooked is the Native American community present in the city. Historically, the Baltimore area was home to the Lumber, Pistacataway and Algonquian tribes amongst others. (Baltimore Reservation) What was once their sprawling natural landscape is now a towering city, but their presence is still alive and vital to the city's own rich history.

One major organization that is keeping these traditions alive is the Baltimore American Indian Center (BAIC). The center is Baltimore's largest Native American community that is a hub for cultural events, volunteer opportunities, a museum, and so many ways for Indigenous tribes to reconnect with their community.

The museum houses a display center for historic artifacts preserved by their respective tribes, as well as a community garden, garden wall, and multi-purpose community center. Visitors can go and immerse themselves in the tribes of the Baltimore area to learn more about these important pieces of history.

The BAIC hosts events regularly to promote cultural awareness and community engagement. There is a Culture Class every Tuesday night from 6p.m. to 7p.m. And each year, they hold their annual Pow-Wow, which includes cultural dances, food, music, vendors and so on. This year's will mark their 48th year hosting the event.

Centers such as these are vital, especially for cultural communities that may not be the majority. When many people think of Indigenous populations, many people may first think of places out in the Southwest such as Oklahoma and Arizona. But here in Baltimore, there is a diverse population of over ten different tribes.

The BAIC takes part and pride in helping these tribes throughout the city. The organization was founded to support this Native American community and so it provides services that include education, skills, training, workforce development, child care, after-school arts and seniors programs, as well as health and healing services.

It is also important to the BAIC that it is not only a hub for support, but also a celebration of culture. So much of Native American history in the United States is so tragic. And while it is important to acknowledge the tragedies, the community also wants to highlight a celebration of culture. The center holds regular traditional dance classes and dances, different ways to connect and create traditional art, as well as educational opportunities.

Not only does the Indigenous community have history in Baltimore- they have a presence, one they want to make known and keep alive. Organizations like the BAIC are vital, as they not only offer support but also a way to continue these traditions and practices. They have always had a place in the city, the larger cultural groups must recognize their importance and what it means for the city.
